Indian authorities say government troops have intercepted a group of Islamic militants trying to sneak into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani side, killing two of them.
The authorities say the incident took place early Tuesday north of Srinagar near the Line of Control, the de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. They say the infiltrators were killed in a shootout after they refused to surrender, and that soldiers are searching for the rest of the militants who managed to escape.
Muslim separatists in Indian Kashmir are fighting for an independent Kashmir or its merger with neighboring Pakistan. The fight against Indian rule has killed tens of thousands of people since it began in 1989.
