Hong Kong Police Clash with Protesters at Trade Summit

Hong Kong police have used tear gas, pepper spray, batons, and fire hoses to keep thousands of demonstrators at bay, as delegations to World Trade Organization talks met behind locked doors. The protesters, brandishing bamboo sticks, tried on Saturday to break down metal barricades around the building and attempted to knock over a police van blocking a street.

Our VOA correspondent on the scene says demonstrators appear to outnumber security officers near the convention center. Also today, dozens of protesters jumped into Hong Kong's notoriously polluted Victoria Harbor to dramatize their grievances against the WTO. Some 10-thousand activists are in Hong Kong for rallies against the organization, which tries to set global trade policies.
