Israel's military has fired artillery rounds into the northern Gaza Strip in an effort to enforce a buffer zone to prevent Palestinian militants from firing rockets into Israel. Palestinian witnesses said one militant was injured in the attack late Wednesday.
Earlier, Israeli aircraft dropped leaflets over northern Gaza, warning residents to avoid "no go" border areas detailed in a map printed on the flyers. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the Israeli action, saying Israel has no right to try to reassert control over parts of Gaza. Israel withdrew from the territory earlier this year.
Elsewhere in Gaza, gunmen kidnapped three British citizens. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
