Pakistani security forces are searching for the unidentified assailants who killed at least eight soldiers in an overnight attack on a checkpoint in a remote tribal region along the border with Afghanistan. A military spokesman says several soldiers are also missing after the assailants, armed with rockets and assault rifles, ambushed them at a newly built post in the troubled North Waziristan region. In a separate incident, witnesses say helicopter gunships pounded a home, killing eight people and wounding nine in a village north of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan. Military officials say an investigation into the incident is underway, but did not provide any details. Tens of thousands of Pakistani forces are deployed in the semi-autonomous region, searching for foreign militants.
