The government in Bangladesh has appointed two new election commissioners, enhancing the size of the Commission, amidst severe controversy. The Chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdul Aziz and the present commissioners seem to differ on a number of issues including the High Court rulings on fresh voters’ list. I
It is alleged that the CEC had not been calling any meetings of the Commission for the fear of losing his own stand on making fresh voters’ list. Chief Election Commissioner has not been attending his office for his sickness. Opposition 14-party alliance which has been calling for the resignation of the CEC and have protested the appointment of the new commissioners have called a general strike to protest the appointment.
