Grenade Blast Wounds Six in Indian Kashmir

Authorities in Indian Kashmir say suspected Islamic militants have detonated a grenade, wounding at least six people, including two policemen.

The authorities say the blast occurred on Saturday near a security post in a crowded business district in the heart of Srinagar. They say the attackers apparently missed their intended target -- a patrol of paramilitary soldiers. The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals. Police cordoned off the area and were searching for the attackers. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Muslim separatists in Indian Kashmir have been fighting for an independent Kashmir or its merger with neighboring Pakistan since 1989. Their fight against Indian rule has killed tens of thousands of people.
