Stranded Pakistanis Clash With Bangladeshi Police in Dhaka

Hundreds of Pakistanis stranded in Bangladesh clashed with police in the capital, Dhaka on Thursday. The violence started as the refugees marched towards the Pakistani embassy to demand help with being repatriated to Pakistan.

Bangladeshi police used batons and tear gas to disperse the protesters, and at least 50 people were injured. A spokesman for the demonstrators blamed police for the clashes, saying they blocked a peaceful procession. Police say they charged after the repatriation-seekers began throwing stones. The demonstrators also called for Bangladeshi authorities to improve relief supplies to the refugee camps.

Bangladesh is home to around 250 thousand stranded Pakistanis who have refused Bangladeshi citizenship since the country split from Pakistan in 1971. More from our stringer in Dhaka
