Fatah Leaders Oppose Coalition With Hamas

The Fatah Party of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is expected to reject an invitation to join the new Hamas-led government.

Fatah legislators say a final decision will not be made for another day or two, but say they are likely to reject the offer. The offer was discussed Saturday as Fatah leaders opened several days of talks about the party's recent defeat in legislative elections. Hamas swept to a surprise victory in January parliamentary elections. The party is now in the process of putting together a new Cabinet, and has said it would like to build a broad coalition.

The party is considered a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and the European Union. It has rejected calls to renounce its violent ideology and to recognize Israel.
