Bangladesh’s Opposition Leaders & Activists Injured, Demand Independent Election Commission


At least 50 people were injured in the Bangladeshi capital during a violent clash between police and opposition activists calling for electoral reform. Witnesses say police used tear gas and water cannons in Dhaka on Sunday to stop hundreds of activists from reaching the electoral commission office.

An alliance of 14 parties organized the protest to call for the resignation of three election commission officials it says are biased. The groups want a more independent commission before elections are held next year. The opposition has threatened to boycott the election if its demands for reform are not met.
