Indian movie star Salman Khan has been sent to prison for five years for killing a protected antelope. Right after the verdict was read, Khan was driven to the central jail in Jodhpur, a desert city in the western state of Rajasthan.
He was convicted of shooting a "Chinkara", also known as black buck, while on a hunting trip in 1998, triggering angry protests by locals who revere the animal. The court in Jodhpur has also fined him 25,000 Indian rupees ($560). Khan has had several run-ins with the law, and he is expected to appeal against the decision.
In February, the actor was sentenced to a year in jail for killing black bucks on a separate hunting trip in the state, but was granted bail to appeal to a higher court.
