Indian police say a top Hindu nationalist leader, Pramod Mahajan, has been hospitalized after his younger brother shot him on Saturday at his home in Bombay. Bombay Police Commissioner A.N. Roy said Mahajan has undergone surgery after being shot in the chest three times at point blank range.
A hospital statement said Mahajan is in the intensive care unit on ventilator support. He is listed in critical condition. Roy says the brother, Pravin Mahajan, surrendered to police after the shooting. The chief says the incident between the brothers occurred over a family dispute. Pravin Mahajan's lawyers say he is mentally ill, suffering from depression.
Pramod Mahajan is a leading member of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party. A member of the upper house of India's parliament, he was information technology minister in the last BJP-led administration.
