Investors Decide to Shut Down Garment Factories at EPZ in Dhaka

Investors at the Dhaka Export Processing Zone said on Saturday that the authorities had failed to provide security for their industries against ‘mob attacks’ and the situation had gone ‘out of control’ forcing closure of their units.

The Bangladesh EPZ Investors Association on Saturday announced an indefinite closure of their factories, until the situation permitted them to resume operations in some 84 factories, owned by foreign and local entrepreneurs, employing 75,000 workers.

At a hurriedly called press conference at the Soargaon Hotel, the leaders of the association claimed that they had been forced to shut their factories following continuous ‘vandalism’ of ‘outside mobs’ and ‘instigators’ at the DEPZ from May 22 which escalated on Saturday.
