An Agreement Reached on Meeting Labor’s Demand

The government at a meeting with trade union leaders and garment factory owners on Sunday assured the workers in the export processing zones at Savar of the implementation of all rules of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority.

The meeting also decided to reorganize the minimum wage board in three days with proper representation of garment workers on the board over workers’ resentment at the inclusion of the present representative. The state minister for labor and employment, Aman Ullah Aman, who chaired the meeting, said measures would be taken to implement BEPZA rules.

The owners of the garment factories outside the export processing zone agreed to meet all the major demands — including weekly holiday, maternity leave, and minimum wage — of the workers in phases.
