An Indian soldier has been killed in a gunbattle with suspected militants near the ceasefire Line of Control dividing the disputed Kashmir region between India and Pakistan.
The Associated Press says one militant was also killed in Friday's fighting in the Indian-controlled portion of the troubled region.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed since 1989 in fighting between security forces and militant separatist groups in Indian Kashmir.
The Indian government has accused Pakistan of arming and training the militants. However, the Pakistani government denies the allegation.
Some Kashmiri separatist groups based in Pakistan want an independent Kashmir by uniting the Indian and Pakistani portions of the Himalayan region. Others want Indian Kashmir to merge with Pakistan.
