Judiciary Needs to be Independence of the Executive ,says Zahir

Dr M Zahir, an eminent lawyer from Bangladesh while giving his views on the recent defamation suit against the members of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in Bangladesh said that the whole issue proved that the judiciary , in particular the lower courts need to be free from the influence of the executive.

He said that he was surprised that without having judged the merit of the case the lower court issued arrest warrants against five prominent citizens of the country.

Dr Zahir also said that apparently it was not for the alleged defamation of Mahmudur Rahman that the plaintiff filed the case for it were so the charge would have been allegdly against one person. But the petition it seemed was against CPD as a whole. Mahmud , therefore, it seems was contesting the facts and figures of the CPD which went against the Board of Investment which he heads.
