Richard Boucher, Assistant Secretary of South & Central Asian Affairs in his speech at SAIS , Johns Hopkins University spoke on US policy towards South Asia . He said that US policy in South Asia is centered around four main factors, the fight against terrorism, ensuring the growth of a moderate democracy in South Asian countries, the economic development and the regional cooperation.
Referring to Bangladesh Mr Boucher said that although the terrorists leaders in Bangladesh have been detained, a lot more needs to be done to break the net work. Talking about the upcoming election in Bangladesh, Mr Boucher emphasized on a fair, free , peaceful and credible election in Bangladesh .
Richard Boucher also said that the US is interested in regional cooperation in South Asia and therefore it is interested in having an observer’s role in the SAARC.
