Sri Lankan authorities say Tamil Tiger rebels rammed an explosives-laden truck into a naval convoy, killing at least 92 sailors and wounding more than 150 others.
The suicide attack occurred Monday in north-central Sri Lanka, at a transit point where sailors converge before being transported to the eastern naval base of Trincomalee.
It came as Japanese envoy Yasushi Akashi met with Sri Lankan officials ahead of scheduled peace talks between the government and Tamil Tigers on October 28th and 29th in Geneva. Akashi is also expected to travel to a rebel stronghold in the north to meet with the Tiger leadership.
Hundreds of people on both sides have been killed since July in heavy fighting that has shredded a ceasefire negotiated by Norway four years ago.
