Palestinian Witnesses: Gunmen Exchange Fire in Gaza City

Palestinian witnesses say gunmen have exchanged fire near the Gaza City home of a top official with the Hamas-led Palestinian government.

It was not clear if the gunbattle early on Friday near the home of Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar pitted Hamas fighters against those from the rival Fatah faction.

Witnesses say the shootout may have been between Hamas and a local clan.

Hamas and Fatah agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday after more than a week of violence killed more than a dozen people and injured many others.

The two factions have been locked in a power struggle since Hamas won elections last January.

Late last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for early elections after months of failed talks between his Fatah party and Hamas on forming a unity government.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials say they are reviewing their ceasefire with Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Israel says Palestinians have fired at least 40 rockets into Israel since the two sides agreed to the truce.

On Thursday, a Palestinian rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit a community center in the Israeli town of Sderot. There were no injuries.
