Veteran broadcaster and a former editor of VOA's Bangla Service, Sharful Alam, died on the 22nd of January at the age of 77.
Alam joined VOA's Bangladesh language service in Washington in 1962 after working for Radio Pakistan in Dhaka for several years. In 1972, he joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service as a Foreign Service Officer, holding posts in Poland, Romania and the United Arab Emirates.
A decade later, he returned to the Voice of America's Bangla service where he worked until his retirement in 2002.
During his long career at VOA, Alam was involved in coverage of historic events including the U.S. Apollo 11 moon landing and the funeral of President John F. Kennedy.
