British Soldier Killed in Southern Afghanistan

NATO says one British soldier has been killed and two others wounded during a gunbattle with Taleban insurgents in southern Afghanistan.

Friday's death in Helmand province brings the number of NATO troops killed in Afghanistan this week to 12. It comes a day after two NATO soldiers were killed and another wounded by two roadside bombs in eastern Afghanistan.

On Thursday, US-led coalition forces say more than 35 suspected Taleban militants were killed during a fierce battle involving US warplanes.

The coalition said in a statement, the insurgents were killed during a five-hour fighting in Sangin district of Helmand province.

Separately, the coalition says its troops killed three Taleban militants who ambushed a civilian helicopter after it made an emergency landing in Ghazni province, south of Kabul.

The coalition said US and Afghan soldiers rescued five contractors onboard the helicopter, which had experienced mechanical problems.

The Taleban said they shot down the helicopter. There has been no independent confirmation of either account.
