18 Die as Temperatures Soar in Northern India

Indian media reports that 18 people died on Saturday as temperatures in northern India soared to record highs.

The northern state of Uttar Pradesh was the worst hit with 15 deaths. Two people died in northern Punjab state, and another died in neighboring Haryana.

Temperatures in New Delhi and many parts of the north reached nearly 45 degrees Celsius (116 degrees Fahrenheit). Weather experts say they expect the excessive heat to last for the next couple of days.

A total of 53 people have died from the heat since the start of the Indian summer in April.
