Authorities in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh say the death toll from two explosions in crowded public areas in the capital, Hyderabad, has reached at least 37 people.
The authorities say more than 60 others were wounded in the blasts, which occurred almost simultaneously. Some of the injured are in serious condition. The first explosion took place during an evening laser show at a packed auditorium. The second was at a busy restaurant about five kilometers away. Senior state officials described the blasts as terrorist attacks, but urged people to remain calm. At least one other bomb was found in the city, but was safely defused.
There was no claim of responsibility. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the Hyderabad blasts.
In May, a bomb killed 11 people at a historic mosque in Hyderabad. Five more people were killed in clashes between Muslim protesters and security forces that erupted after the bombing. Hyderabad is one of India's largest cities and a center of the nation's information-technology industry. It has a large Muslim minority and a history of clashes between Muslims and Hindus.
