Where Angels Fear to Tread & Other Essays: Jalil’s Book on the Present & the Past

In Where Angels Fear to Tread & Other Essays , Azizul Jalil , unlike his first book Turbulence and Tranquility reflects on contemporary Bangladesh as well as takes a glimpse from the past beginning from the failed dream of Alexander to conquer Bengal to the partition of India.

His writings on historical matters are more anecdotic and less documentary which creates interests in a reader’s mind. While talking about the contemporary Bangladesh in the first part of the book and about travel, Hobbies and Impressions in the last part of the book, Jalil seem to be very impressionistic and indeed subjective too which gives his essays a clear literary characteristics.

Azizul Jalil retired from the World Bank in 1988 and now lives in Washington spending his time in traveling and writing.
