Detained Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Trial Stayed


The trial of the detained former prime minister and the Chief of Awami League Sheikh Hasina in the Tk 2.99 crore extortion case filed by the East Coast Trading managing director, Azam J Chowdhury, was stayed on Thursday following a petition filed by Sheikh Hasina.

The High Court bench of Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice M Shahidul Islam stayed the trial of the case after hearing an application filed by Hasina,

According to the order, all the proceedings of the case will remain stayed until disposal of the rule the court issued on July 30, 2007 asking the government to explain the legality of placing the extortion case under the Emergency Powers Rules.

The court also ordered that Hasina’s writ petition, on which the rule was issued, to be placed in the list of the cases for hearing in court on January 21.
