The topic of this week's Hello Washington is The Kolkata Book Fair. The city of Kolkata is going to celebrate the 33rd Kolkata Book Fair this month. It is the world’s largest non-trade book fair, Asia’s largest book fair and the most attended book fair in the world.
The annual book fair has become an integral part of the socio-cultural life of the people of the city of Kolkata and the pride of city’s residents. More than a million people usually attend the ten-day event of the fair.
The United States of America is the ‘Theme Country’ of this year’s fair. Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa will lead the US delegation to the 2008 Kolkata Book Fair along with several US poet laureates including Rita Dove and Donald Hall. The different agencies of the US government including the office of the Consulate General of the United States of America in Kolkata are active participants in this year’s Kolkata Book Fair.
In our Hello Washington program the participating guests were Mr. Tridib Chattopadhyay, Mr. Anil Acharya and Mr. Kuldeep Singh.
Mr. Tridib Chattopadhyay is the chief organizer of this year’s Kolkata Book Fair and he is the General Secretary of Kolkata Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Guild.
Mr. Anil Acharya is the former chief organizer of Kolkata Book Fair and former General Secretary of Kolkata Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Guild.
Mr. Kuldeep Singh is the Additional Commissioner Of Police, Kolkata Metropolitan Police.
