Indian Republic Day Celebrations Marred by Bad Weather in Kolkata


The Republic Day Parade was curtailed in Kolkata on Saturday following heavy rains that lashed the capital and adjoining areas since Friday night.

A Defense Spokesman said that the parade was being curtailed because of the rains. While the parade by the Armed forces, the paramilitary and the police were held as scheduled, display of tableaux and march past by schoolchildren were cancelled. Spectators turned out in lesser number to witness the parade on the Red Road as it was raining since morning.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Deb and top brass from the Armed Forces and the police took their seats under tents. Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi took the salute at the Parade which began on schedule at 9.30 am.
