Chief Adviser of the Caretaker Government in Bangladesh Fakhruddin Ahmed on Thursday announced government decision to introduce mobile phone network in the backwoods of Chittagong Hill Tracts, primarily in the three municipalities of Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban.
The government decision met a long time demand of the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, once a troubled region that returned to peace following the 1997 peace accord.
Mobile-phone network will be primarily available in the municipal areas of the three district headquarters.
The chief adviser said setting up digital telephone exchanges at upazila level in the hill districts would be considered following availability of resources.
He hoped that decision on manpower for setting up judge courts in the three districts would be taken within next three months.
Fakhruddin announced the government decisions at an opinion-exchange meeting with government officials and people of different professional groups of the region at Rangamati Tribal Cultural Institute auditorium in the morning. The meeting was organised by Rangamati district administration.
