US Department of State’s Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher testified this week at the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Sub Committee on South Asia. The topic was US Assistance to South Asia: Is there a strategy to go with all that money? Chairman of the Sub Committee Gary L. Ackerman gave an introductory speech.
They mentioned the democratic process in Bangladesh in their speeches and reiterated the US administration’s call for withdrawing the emergency to ensure free and fair elections in Bangladesh by December 2008.
Mr. Boucher said in his testimony that the United States has a consistent policy basis throughout the region: promoting democratic stability as the base from which to counter extremism and terrorism.
