Indian Parliament Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee has answered various charges against him by the CPM which expelled him for refusing to step down as Speaker.
He has said, he would have violated the spirit of the Indian Constitution if he had bowed down to the dictate of the party. He said, the Speaker is not supposed to be guided by the wishes of a political party.
He also made an important suggestion that all future Speakers should temporarily resign membership from their parties to avoid similar questions regarding a Speaker`s primary allegiance.
