Russian troops and tanks pushed further into Georgia Wednesday despite
a French-brokered truce to end nearly a week of fighting between the
two countries.
Witnesses say Russian troops and paramilitaries looted the strategic
town of Gori -- just outside the breakaway region of South Ossetia.
Reporters in western Georgia say Russia bombed several Georgian Coast
Guard boats docked at the Black Sea port of Poti. The Russian navy has
been enforcing a naval blockade of Poti's commercial harbor for several
days.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN television Wednesday
that Russia never intended to observe a cease-fire. He said Russian
tanks are still looting Georgian villages and advancing slowly but
surely to the capital of Tbilisi.
Mr. Saakashvili compared Russia's actions to Soviet aggression in the past century.
Russia insists it has not violated the truce.
