More than a hundred fishermen are feared missing after a tidal surge hit southern Bangladesh. Local fishermen say at least 25 boats did not return to shore and may have capsized in the rough sea.
Weather officials say a depression (an area of low pressure) today, Wednesday caused high tides to flood low-lying areas of southern coastal districts. Officials say Patuakhali district was among the worse hit, with residents and tourists forced to flee after floodwaters inundated much of the area.
Bangladesh has already been dealing with monsoon rains this year. The
southeast Asian country was severely affected by two floods and a
devastating cyclone last year, which killed more than three thousand
people.
