Road Accidents Kill at Least 48 in India

Authorities say road accidents have killed at least 48 people in northern and eastern India.

Police say at least 23 people were killed when a passenger bus slammed into a parked truck on Tuesday in northeastern Assam state.

The accident occurred in the Dhubri district, about 300 kilometers west of the state capital of Dispur.

Investigators say the bus was speeding when the driver lost control and collided with the truck. About 40 other people were injured.

The bus, which was built to carry 35 passengers, was packed with nearly twice as many people.

In northern Uttarakhand state, at least 20 passengers were killed today when their bus fell into a gorge. At least five people also were killed in another accident in the Himalayan state.
