Bangladesh National Party Threatens to Pull Out of Elections

One of the two main political parties in Bangladesh is threatening to pull out of national elections unless its leader is allowed to participate.

The Secretary of the Bangladesh National Party, Khandakar Delwar Hossain, says the BNP will not participate in the December 18th election unless its leader Khaleda Zia is allowed to participate. Zia is currently barred from contesting the election because she faces graft charges.

The BNP and the Awami League are the two main parties in Bangladesh. Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina faces similar charges. She is currently in the United States on a medical parole.

The development comes after an official of the interim government said it was unclear if either woman would be able to participate in the election because of the charges they face. Amir Khasru has more on the story.
