Fire Arms Seized in Kolkata on the Eve of Indian Republic Day

A huge quantity of firearms was recovered from a house at Pratibesi Para near Baguiati in North 24-Parganas in a raid by the CID on the eve of India’s republic day. Some 8000 live rounds, 10 semi-automatic rifles, five rocket launchers, three grenades and three bullet-proof jackets were seized. The house owner and his domestic help have been arrested.

One of those involved in the racket, Anupam Chowdhury, from whose house the police seized thousands of bullets and cartridges and several firearms was produced before a court in Barasat in the State’s North 24 Parganas district that remanded him on Monday to ten days in police custody.

The arms haul from Chowdhury’s residence in the Baguiati area was made by a team of officials of the State’s Criminal Investigation Department on Sunday evening. More than 5000 cartridges, country-made and sophisticated rifles and revolvers, pen-pistols and a bullet-proof vest were among the items seized.
