The Election Commission (EC) will give more time to
political parties for submitting their party constitutions after completing
necessary formalities, including council sessions.
"The EC will actively
consider the matter if the political parties request it for more time for
submission of their party constitutions to the EC," said Chief Election
Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda in Dhaka on Monday.
Talking to journalists Dr Huda,
however, said the EC has a plan to make the delimitation law time-befitting for
the general election and update voter lists with photographs from May or at the
beginning of June.
"There is nothing to put
pressure on the political parties for submission of the constitutions as the EC
has enough time to do the job," he added.
Referring to the existing
delimitation law, the CEC said the number of parliamentary seats in the urban
areas has increased significantly than that of the rural areas as delimitation
of the seats was done on the basis of population.
"Now, it is needed to
delimit the parliamentary seats further to maintain balance between rural and
urban areas," the former bureaucrat said. Replying to a question on
strengthening the commission, he said the EC has started working for bringing
structural changes to it.
But in the true sense, he said
the strengthening of the EC depends on the mentality of people as well as
politicians.
