SQ Chowdhury could  Lose his Parliament Membership

The Election Commission (EC) in Bangladesh on Tuesday decided to recommend the Parliament Secretariat to cancel parliament membership of BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for providing 'untrue' information about his educational qualification.

It has decided to write to the Speaker for taking legal steps against the BNP MP for giving 'wrong' information in his affidavit to the EC for his electoral candidacy, which is deemed to be an offence of lying under oath.

Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain told newsmen of the EC's decision at his office on the day.

Sakhawat Hossain said that Mr Chowdhury could not remain a parliament member after giving the 'untrue' information in his statement on oath in the affidavit. He added that the Speaker will take legal step according to the 1981 Act in this regard.

Reacting to the EC decision, the veteran parliamentarian made it clear that neither the EC nor the Speaker had the legal authority to cancel his membership over the issue.

Chowdhury, who was elected MP from Chittagong-2 constituency, in an affidavit attached with the nomination form mentioned that he had no educational qualification.
