Ziauddin M Choudhury’s book, Assassination of Ziaur Rahman and the
Afermath is a chronology of events surrounding the killing of General Ziaur
Rahman , the then President of Bangladesh .
The book also contains a brief
summary on the rise of Zia to power. The Author Ziauddin M Choudhury was the
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong during Zia’s assassination during a failed
army coup in May 1981.
The author in this book has
pointed out how gradually Ziaur Rahman became ambitious to gain unchallenged
power by not only removing Justice Sayem from the office of the President of
the Republic but also by forming a new political party which contained many
members who had opposed the War of Liberation in Bangladesh.
Ziaur Rahman in the haste to
launch political parties, ignored that a section of army were unhappy about the
political system into which General Zia entangled himself .
The author, from his vantage
point , doubts if one would if the
officers charged and executed were the only people involved in the
assassination , if General Manzoor actually was the leader of the coup which
failed and ended in a mess.
