In an interview with Voice of America, Dr. Sreeradha Datta, Research Fellow and South Asia Expert at the Institute of Defense Studies (IDS), New Delhi, India, said that ultimately the election was held more or less peacefully in Afghanistan under the threats of Taliban and other challenging situation.
She credited the courage of Afghan people, men and specially women, who came out to vote rejecting the Taliban threats. She said it proves that there is the desire for peace and normalcy among the common people in Afghanistan.
Dr. Datta believes that it will take a long time to bring democracy in a country like Afghanistan which has been ruled by feudal chiefs and tribal leaders for centuries.
She also thinks that it would not be wise to judge the society of Afghanistan with the common yard stick of modern standard of values.
