Maldives to Permit 16,100 Undocumented Bangladeshi Workers to Stay and Work

Bangladesh’s Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said that the Maldives government is going to permit 16,100 undocumented Bangladeshi workers to stay and work there.

The minster just returned from Maldives.

He told journalists that Maldives authorities assured them that they would not deport any Bangladeshi workers. He said Maldives will try to employ them from next January.

Earlier, the Maldives deported several hundred undocumented workers after the global recession hit its economy. Bangladesh mission initiated a dialogue with Maldives authorities which was followed up by a weeklong visit by a three-member delegation led by expatriates' welfare minister.
