Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is facing support as well as opposition because of the crackdown against businesses with illegal VoIP operations. Because of these illegal operations, the government has already lost much money, but it has been said that the companies will reopen soon.
The raid began on March 14th, and since then, BTRC has shut down private phone operators and eighteen internet service providers because of illegal Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) operations. (BTRC) closed the offices of Ranks Telecom Ltd or RanksTel licensed in 2004, WorldTel Bangladesh Ltd running since 2000. Two other PSTN operators, Dhaka Phone and PeoplesTel, have also been shut down. Several top officials of these companies have been arrested.
