An Indian scientist says rising sea levels in the Bay of Bengal have submerged a tiny island that Bangladesh and India both claimed as their own.
Sugata Hazra of Jadavpur University in Kolkata told reporters Thursday there are no traces of the island called South Talpatti by Bangladesh, and New Moore Island by India. It was located in the Sundarbans delta, midway between the two countries. Hazra says he came to the conclusion through satellite images that were confirmed by fishermen.
The island was created by a cyclone which struck the Bay of Bengal about 40 years ago. No permanent structures were ever built on it, but India planted its flag there.
