At Least 28 Dead in Blasts in Bali, Indonesia - 2002-10-12


Indonesian police say at least 28 people are dead and more than 100 wounded after a bomb destroyed a popular nightclub on the resort island of Bali.

The dead include at least 10 foreigners. There has been no claim of responsibility.

The military is restricting travel at local airports and seaports.

Police say there was a second blast near the U-S consulate in Denpasar, the island's capital, but no injuries were reported there.

Another bomb exploded hours earlier outside the Philippine consulate in Manado, on the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. It caused minor damage but no injuries.

Manado is near the southern Philippines, where rebels with the Muslim Abu Sayyaf group operate.

Authorities have not indicated if the the blasts were related.
