Awami League Chief and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sheikh Hasina, challenged the BNP-Jamaat coalition government to prove the allegations against her of tarnishing the country's image abroad. She threatened to file defamation suit against the government in the event of failure to prove the allegations against her.
Meanwhile, a court in the capital yesterday convicted five persons to death for murdering schoolboy Rubayet Ahmed Bappi. Eight-year-old Bappi, a student of class III of the Armanitola Government High School, was abducted by his cousin Shipon from home on August 5. Shipon and the other kidnappers then demanded Tk 20 lakh in ransom for his release. Later on the same day, Bappi was killed.
