Sheikh Hasina was yesterday re-elected unopposed president of the Awami League at the party's national council meeting in Dhaka. Awami League President Sheikh Hasina asked her party representatives to prepare for a tougher struggle against "oppression" by the coalition government of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Kicking-off the council at Paltan Maidan in the capital, the opposition leader called upon the government to immediately stop "political vendetta, conflict, ill-designed propaganda and conspiracy to spare the nation from a deep crisis".
