Palestinians Urge U-N Condemnation Of Israeli Raid In Gaza - 2003-02-19

The Palestinian leadership is urging the United Nations to condemn an Israeli incursion overnight in Gaza City that left 11 Palestinians dead and more than 20 others wounded.

Palestinians say about 40 Israeli tanks backed by helicopter gunships took part in the raid in densely populated civilian neighborhoods. They say several houses were destroyed, a school was damaged and electricity was cut in the Shajaiyah and Tuffah neighborhoods.

An Israeli military statement says the operation was aimed at what it called "terrorist infrastructure." It says troops destroyed workshops used for manufacturing weapons and exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen.

The raid is the second in Gaza City since a roadside bomb blew up an Israeli tank and killed four soldiers Saturday. The militant Hamas organization claimed responsibility for that attack.

Elsewhere in Gaza on Wednesday, one Israeli was injured when a short-range Qassam rocket was fired from the northern Gaza Strip into the Israeli industrial zone of Sderot.

And in separate violence in the West Bank, a Palestinian militant from the hardline Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade was killed when his car exploded in Jenin. Three others were injured in the blast. And in Nablus, Palestinians say a 32-year-old baker and a 16-year-old boy were shot and killed by Israeli troops.
