Ekushey February , the Language Martyr Day , is being observed in Bangladesh with due solemnity.On this day 51 years ago, the students of Dhaka took to the streets in protest at the denial of Bangla as the national language and imposition of Urdu as the sole official language of Pakistan.
Floral wreath were placed in the Central Shaheed Minar ( the Martyr Monument ) at the twelve past one midnight by President Iajuddin Ahmed, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Floral wreath on behalf of the opposition leader Sheikh Hasina , who has not returned from her Hajj Trip , was also placed. The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh . The Ekushey February was recognized as the International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO on November 17, 1999.
