A country wide general strike in Bangladesh , called by an opposition alliance of eleven parties , went on peacefully without any major incident. The generalstrike shut educational institutions, business establishments and affected movement of vehicles in the capital and the districts.
An alliance of small leftist parties called this strike to protest against , among other things , price hike, terror and corruption. The alliance also demanded the removal of " the killers of 1971" from the present government referring to the alleged role of the fundamentalist parties now a partner in the four-party coalition government.
