North Korea Denounces US Sanctions on Missile Technology Export - 2003-04-04

North Korea has scolded the United States for imposing sanctions on Pyongyang for exporting missile technology to Pakistan.

The official Korean Central News Agency Friday called the US sanctions ridiculous and unjustifiable. It said North Korea is a sovereign country that is not legally bound by any restrictions on the export of missiles or missile technology.

Earlier this week, the United States announced it had imposed sanctions on Pakistani and North Korean companies for a barter deal in which missile components were exchanged for expertise in nuclear weapons technology. Washington said the two-year sanctions, forbidding transactions with US government and business, also apply to the North Korean government because it is a non-market economy.

The US action is symbolic, because neither the Pakistani nor the North Korean company has business contacts with the United States.

North Korea's response Friday said that the country's missiles are of a peaceful and defensive nature. It said the United States is ignorant of international law and common sense.
