Two Iraqi Women Working for Coalition killed in Baghdad - 2004-05-16

Two Iraqi women working for the US-led coalition have been killed and two others wounded, in an attack on a vehicle in the Iraqi capital.

Police and witnesses said the victims were were hit by small-arms fire late Saturday in an ambush as they rode in a mini-van in southern Baghdad.

Elsewhere, British officials in southern Iraq say insurgents have killed at least three civilians in a failed attempt to hit a coalition military base. The officials say a rocket attack early Sunday in Basra missed the target and hit a nearby house instead.

Other clashes between coalition forces and insurgents have been reported in Karbala and Nasiriyah -- both south of Baghdad.

In Nasiriyah, Italian troops battled with fighters loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. At least four Italian soldiers were slightly wounded.

Reuters (news agency) reports the city of Najaf relatively calm, with insurgents burying the remains of 22 insurgents killed Friday near the southern town of Amara.
