Iraqi, US Troops Target Insurgents South of Baghdad - 2004-10-05

Thousands of Iraqi and U.S. soldiers are sweeping through areas south of Baghdad in a new operation against suspected insurgents.

The U.S. military says troops have already arrested 30 suspects and captured a suspected insurgent training camp in Babil. It says soldiers also took control of a key bridge spanning the Euphrates river that U.S. officials believe was used by insurgents.

News of the operation came hours after interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said there are new military plans to defeat the insurgency. He did not provide specifics, but promised elections would go ahead as scheduled in January.

In other developments, car bombs aimed at U.S. convoys Tuesday in Mosul and Ramadi killed five Iraqis.
